About Equity Scholarships Types of scholarships • BBM Aboriginal Youth Scholarship & BBM Youth Scholarship (Up to $400 per student based on individual need & Equity Committee assessment) • Sydney Institute Student Association (SISA) Equity Scholarship(Up to $150 per student based on individual need & Equity Committee assessment)
About BBM scholarships • BBM (formerly Big Brother Movement) external sponsor ;non-political, non-sectarian organisation providing funding for youth initiatives • Funding for TAFE NSW since 2002 to support students experiencing exceptional financial hardship • Includes a targeted program for supporting Aboriginal youth students in need • Funding varies from $100 - $400 depending on individual students circumstances • There is a ‘cap’ on expenditure with a guide on the Application Form Funding available
Funding covers • Educational expenses and equipment only • First priority: Course related textbooks and equipment; uniform/protective clothing; Contribution toward enrol. fees • Second Priority: Travel; Accommodation (Emergency only) Target group • Funding is for students experiencing exceptionalfinancial hardship • Students can be nominated by teachers, counsellors or coordinators
Target group Eligibility • BBM Youth & BBM Aboriginal Youth • Aged between 15 and 23 years • Demonstrated exceptional financial hardship • Recently completed a TAFE NSW pathway or access course • Demonstrated commitment to previous study • Funding is for educational expenses & equipment only
Target group and eligibility Refugee student assistance scheme Students must have: • a humanitarian visa, protection visas, or bridging visas; • open age with a limit of $200 per student; • be in their first year of enrolment in a Sydney Institute course; • provide evidence of exceptional financial hardship and show commitment to study. • This is a joint DET and NSW Teachers Federation funded initiative Sydney Institute Student Association (SISA) Equity) Scholarship • provide evidence of exceptional financial hardship; show commitment to study; open age; preference given to refugee student
Who should fill in the Application Form? • TAFE teachers, counsellors or coordinators only • Please do not give the form to the students to fill in • The nominator will interview the student individually and fill out the Application Form • Email the electronic copy of Application Form to Equity unit • Signed copy to remain with nominator
What evidence is needed for severe financial hardship? Support Statement: • Background on family/partner financial support • i.e. whether both parents/partner are working, financial position parent(s)/partner • Centrelink benefits, Abstudy or Student Allowance • Type of hardship – unable to pay for enrolment, or equipment or internet?
