  1. Global approach to LHC computing Welcome the advent of LCG project Monitor closely otherwise it will either become a LC or (worse) a LCC Today (and tomorrow) try to see progresses, integration, future needs and unavoidable pitfalls of an ambitious project that from INFN point of view involves: F.Ferroni 12-10-2002-GruppoI-Perugia

  2. Main actors: do they play the same piece ? Who is the director ? 4 LHC experiments (and their Tiers) The LCG The GRIDs The Regional Centre The Others (experiments and projects) The super structure of INFN-GRID Coordination and share of resources is an issue

  3. One word on INFN-GRID The complexity of the project will be described By Mirco tomorrow, let me notice one thing here: Without such a vision we could not have started the LHC computing enterprise. The number of young computing pro’s recruited has been impressive in an environment not used to mobilize such resources

  4. Human resources (temporary jobs) (+ a few Others) A very interesting challenge

  5. Soldi (ultimi due anni) Commissioni Nazionali ~ 1.6 Meuro INFN-GRID ~ 1.3 Meuro (1/2 HW) Centro Regionale ~ 2.5 Meuro (1.5 macchine)

  6. The Goal of the LCG To help the experiments’ computing projects prepare, build and operate the computing environment needed to manage and analyze the data coming from the detectors Phase 1 – 2002-05prepare and deploy a prototype of the environment for LHC computing Phase 2 – 2006-08acquire, build and operate the LHC computing service

  7. The two faces of the projects Identify the key software projects for the LHC experiments, help in writing down the requirements, set up working groups to get the jobs done Design the LHC distributed computing, build a credible, scalable prototype on the time scale of 3 years and eventually move on to the real thing having convinced Both the customer (experiments) and the funding agencies

  8. Challenges & Risks • Complexity of the project – Regional Centres, Grid projects, experiments, funding sources and funding motivation • The project is getting under way in an environment where – • there is already a great deal of activity • requirements are changing as understanding and experience develop • some fundamental parts of the environment are evolving more or less independently of the project and LHC

  9. Challenges & Risks • Grid technology • immaturity, US-Europe compatibility • to what extent will mainline products satisfy LCG requirements? • Achieving agreement on common projects, requirements, architecture • Phase 1 funding at CERN • about 50% of materials funding not yet identified • includes the investments to prepare the CERN Computer Centre for the giant computing fabrics needed in Phase 2 • Phase 2 funding at CERN • CHF 20M is NOT included in the LHC cost to completion budget

  10. Concerns about the LCG project • Passive approach to grid technology for at least the first two years (2002 and 2003) • Try to influence what others develop, watch what emerges • Apparently, no close interaction with the developers • Almost all RTAGs to date have focused on applications issues instead of grid technologies • A project of the size and global scope of the LCG should be able to influence what is developed

  11. Agenda per la riunione (11 Nov) LCG LC G

  12. Agenda per la riunione (12 Nov) Tier1-CNAF INFN-GRID Network
