How is your blood sugar regulated? • Glucose enters the bloodstream when you eat. • Glucose causes the Pancreas to releases insulin. • Insulin moves glucose from thebloodstream to muscle, fat and other cells to be used for energy.
What is Diabetes? • Diabetes occurs when thisprocess is not working correctly. • Type 1 Diabetes: Not producing enough or any insulin to uptake the glucose. • Type 2 Diabetes: Cells are no longer sensitive and responding properly to insulin. • Gestational Diabetes: Diabetes during pregnancy.
Risk factors for Type 2 • High Blood pressure • High Triglycerides • Gestational Diabetes • High Fat Diet • High Alcohol intake • Sedentary lifestyle • Obese or overweight • 45 & over • Family History
Prevention • Healthy lifestyle and weight management • Get screened if you are over 45, overweight children and adults should also be screened regularly. • Hemoglobin A1c test (normal = less then 5.7%) • Fasting blood glucose level (normal = less than 100mg/dl)
Managing your Diabetes • Untreated and unmanaged diabetes can be very detrimental to your health. • Hyperglycemic coma • Ketoacidosis (break down of your body’s fat and protein) • Retinopathy (blindness) • Neuropathy (nerve damage) and blood vessel damage leading to amputation.
Managing your Diabetes • Monitor your blood sugar • Take medications as prescribed • Diabetic Diet, meet with a Dietician • Begin an exercise program • With proper diet and exercise, type 2 diabetes can be controlled with lifestyle choices and not medication.
Glycemic Index • Measurement of how much each gram of carbohydrates in foods your eat will raise your blood sugar. • Pure Glucose has a Glycemic index of 100, all other foods are below 100. • Low glycemic index foods will release glucose slow and steady into your blood stream, preventing blood sugar spikes.
