The Rise and Fall of Medieval Villeins: Life Under the Rat Lord

In the harsh reality of medieval life, the villeins suffered under the oppressive rule of a greedy lord known as "the Rat." He exploited their labor without fair compensation, forcing them into a cycle of poverty. With his heavy grip on the village, they lived in small homes while he resided in mansions. The arrival of the Black Death dramatically changed the social structure, killing nearly half the population but inadvertently granting the survivors more opportunity for jobs and freedom. Ultimately, the Rat's tyranny paved the way for a bittersweet transformation of their lives.

  1. You could say the rat was bad because of all the people that died… He would force you to work for him and then not pay you And so life was much much better for the medieval villeins Without his permission, you couldn’t… Leave the village Lived the medieval villeins And he would own several large houses while the villeins only had one small house. Most worked as farmers but had hardly any land The rat started the black death which killed almost half the population! Once… OR Very Hard! THE END But then one day everything changed because of a murderer – the rat! (1000-1500 AD) Because there were less people, there was more money, jobs and freedom to go round The lord of the manor controlled them Life was hard… But you could also say it was good because of the happiness it gave to people afterwards. Marry!
