  2. Purpose • To study how high schools influence the diet and exercise of adolescent type 1 diabetics.

  3. What is type 1 Diabetes? • Affects the pancreas • Islet cells stop producing insulin • Insulin is not a cure • One of the most chronic diseases in American children • 5 - 10 % of all diagnosed cases of diabetes are type 1 • 80 people per day are diagnosed in USA

  4. Ideal diabetic lunch and exercise • Diet: • 3 meals daily • Snacks between meals • 15 servings of carbohydrates • A healthy lunch: • 1 serving of protein • 4 servings of carbohydrates • 1 vegetable or salad

  5. High School Lunch Options • National School Lunch Program • One third of recommended dietary allowance • Twice the amount of vegetables • Vending Machines • 78% of middle and high schools • A la Carte options • High-fat and high-sugar food choices

  7. Greensburg Central Catholic High School • Private schools do not follow NSLP • No nutritional values • No gym class

  8. Survey Results • 8 diabetics, ages 14-17, 6 females, 2 males • 3 buy lunch, 5 pack lunch • 1 student could easily access nutritional values in cafeteria, 4 could not, 3 were unsure • 6 could only purchase water from vending machines • 1 believed vending machines had healthy options
