  3. Student evaluates his/her academic progress and personal development in a range of areas, and identifies targets for future development. Development Plan Self-Appraisal Tool START: Naturally – occurring opportunity in the academic year (e.g. following examinations, at time of module selection). Student and personal tutor discuss and review Self-Appraisal Development Plan and identify strategies and opportunities for realising targets. Implementation of Development Plan by Student University of Leicester PDP Model

  5. So far: small departmental trials • Undergraduate-maths, geography • Postgraduate-Labour Market Studies

  6. Trial results: positives • Students’ positive response to PDP discussions • Better student-tutor understanding • Better structure/purpose to tutor meetings • Short, succinct Self Appraisal Development Plan form

  7. Trial results: negatives • Time-for organising meetings/contacting students • Creates more work-f/u meetings etc. • Some students stopped trial-but If compulsory? • Limited trials with pro-PDP depts/tutors

  8. Managing PDP implementation • Leicester hasn’t had a single PDP champion • Bottom up rather than top down approach • PDP development officer • Institutional and cultural barriers to PDP

  9. What happens next? • Continue small scale dept pilots • Recruit Employability and PDP Development Officer (details on website) early 2005 • Sept 2005: PDP for all 1st year undergraduates and research students-still the aim!
