  5. Venus Second planet from the Sun Composed of dense and poisonous acid clouds which contain sulfur that give the planet its yellow color Much like Earth but slightly smaller Takes 225 days to rotate around Sun

  6. Earth Fifth largest and third planet from the sun 4.5 to 4.6 billion years old 71 percent of surface is water Atmosphere is composed of nitrogen, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide, water

  7. Mars Fourth planet from the sun and the last of the inner planets Named the "red planet" because the sands are composed of red iron oxide Has volcanoes, canyons and craters on the surface Two moons called Phobos and Deimos Takes 687 days to rotate around Sun

  8. Jupiter Fifth planet from the sun and the largest planet Composed of many gases and surrounded by layers of dense clouds Circling the planet are rings of ice and dust Has 16 moons Takes 12 years to rotate around the Sun

  10. Uranus Seventh planet from the sun One of the gas giants Surrounded by a dense, green fog and circled by rings Gray moons which are rumored to be composed of graphite Takes 84 years to rotate around the sun

  11. Neptune Eighth planet from the sun Last gas giant and last planet since Pluto was removed from planetary status Has blue clouds One of the coldest planets b/c it is 3 billion miles from the sun Takes 165 years to rotate around the sun

  12. NOT Pluto. Why? A planet is an object that orbits the sun and is large enough to have become perfectly round due to the force of its own gravity. In addition, a planet has to dominate its orbit. Because Charon, Pluto’s moon, is half Pluto’s size, Pluto is technically not dominating its orbit. Even small asteroids shift Pluto’s orbit around, demoting the tiny planet to “dwarf “planet status. But Pluto is not alone: there are 44 other dwarf planets in our solar system to keep it company!
