  2. Aim The Object strand will deliver practical skills for working with objects in the heritage sector. Brief Participants in this strand will be introduced to traditional archiving techniques used in the heritage sector to account for historical artefacts displaced from their original context and explore new ways to handle these museum objects and information surrounding them in the digital age. Material for individual projects will come from the Nemi Collections at Nottingham Castle Museum and Galleries and the archives of the Herculaneum Conservation Project. Objects….summary

Participants in the strand can choose from two portfolios of material (or pursue a topic relevant to both): (1) Nemi The portfolio comprises the Nottingham collection of artefacts from the Roman sanctuary of Diana at Nemi in Italy and the 19th-century documentation of its archaeological exploration, with a view to create outputs to be showcased in the “Treasures of Nemi” exhibition to be held at Nottingham Castle in Summer 2013. (2) Herculaneum The portfolio comprises the archival materials of the Herculaneum Conservation Project, with a view to further their endeavours in preserving this important Campanian site.   5. Wednesday, November 14, 2012. 11.00-17.00 Case studies(11.00-12.30) From Store-Room to Exhibition. Preparing the exhibition “Treasures of Nemi” (Mrs. Ann Inscker, Nottingham Castle Museum and Galleries). Pompeian Artefacts and Social Identity. Using the legacy data of the Pompeian excavations to build digital archives and to understand household practices (Dr Penelope Allison, University of Leicester). Viewpoints (14.00-15.00) Object, Archive & Audience – The Herculaneum Conservation Project (Mrs Sarah Court, via video-link). Object-Jam (15.00-17.00) Selecting from a range of objects participants have the opportunity to trial the tools and prototype ideas to inform their further work. Toolbox Gallery (throughout the day) A showcase of documentation and archiving tools in practice in the heritage sector. Object…workshop schedule

  6. June 2013: Project Delivery Participants will identify a project during the Workshop. Milestone 1 and 2 will then offer the opportunity to share and reflect on progress.
