  1. Bringing Community into Community Planning Giving the public a say in our city’s future

    GOWANUS CANAL – BROOKLYN, NY
  2. The Problem HUDSON YARDS RENDERING – WEST SIDE OF MANHATTAN Due to the strong NYC real estate market, public and private development is happening citywide. Current law leaves limited time for input from the community. At the same time, a number of developments and rezoning have caused tension amongst longtime residents, small business owners and certain public officials who feel they have been pushed out of the planning process.
  3. Why is it a problem? Current development trends, which have included limited input from the public, have created an affordability crisis in NYC. Community members are being given limited input for input and involvement in how their communities are planned. At times, this planning includes spending their own tax dollars. Unchecked development in residential real estate during the Bloomberg administration led the city to lose more than 385,000 units of housing from 2002 through 2011; about half of the units were rent-regulated, based analysis of data from the New York City Housing and Vacancy Survey.

  5. What’s the Goal? 575 5th Avenue in Brooklyn - municipal parking lot turned into 48 units of supportive housing for low income adults. Reinvent the public planning process in NYC to allow for easier access to participation and more opportunities for engagement while simultaneously providing the public readily accessible information to help them shape communities according to their vision, given the circumstances government must operate within.
  6. When? Study by Community Services Society this year showed that the city lost 40% of apartments for low income residents over the last decade. To battle this trend, action must be taken now. With a new city administration including a new Mayor, City Council Speaker and City Planning Director now is the time to reform the community planning process.
