Aims & Objectives Why? • Re-cap prior learning of elements associated to the Sound Technical feature, which is ONE of the FOUR areas YOU MUST analyze and write about in the exam! • Introduce some key theory around the enjoyment of watching Action-Advnture films, as well as HOW this defines the genre as a whole. • Look at character roles form the genre that conform to an important ideology YOU MUST know for the exam! • See what impact this has on Gender roles within the genre. • Review the learning. A02– Assess candidates’ ability to analyse and respond to a short, unseen moving image extract using media key concepts and appropriate terminology.

  4. 3 minutes Starter YOU MUST match the Term to the definition. YOU COULD, in the space below, consider where x1 of these examples would take place in an Action-Adventure sequence. .

  5. “Dumb movies for a Dumb people” (Yvonne Tasker – 1993) • The genre is marketed at a predominantly young, passiveaudience – stereotypically male (Hartley)- who get great excitement from watching adrenaline pumping action. • The narrative is simplistic – single stranded and closed– conforming to Todorov’s 3 part narrative. • The characters are often one dimensional stereotypes that reflect stereotypical social views – for example Men are strong, women are weak..

YOU COULD also give relevant examples from x1 or more of the texts analysed to support your understanding.

  8. David Marc’s denotes his ideology on Action-Adventure heroines as the following: “Do not seek the limelight, but typically find themselves pushed into dilemmas that force them to take action” and how they ultimately “succeed in doing the right thing” . Do you agree?

  11. You are going to watch a scene form Iron Man 2. YOU MUST make notes on the following areas (write down the points and leave space to answer the questions): • How does the mise-en-scene conveny“high production values” to the audience? – Give examples ‘Iron Man 2’ (2010) Dir. John Favreau • How does Tony Stark challenge David Marc’s views on the typical character roles in the genre? . • What does he represent to the audience in terms of character role?

  13. Levi Strauss – Binary Opposition The Action-Adventure genre has seen a big introduction in “heterosexually tough women” (King & McCaughey) .

  14. 'The Matrix' - Trinity . Divide a NEW Page into the 4 Technical areas ABOVE. YOU MUST analyse the representation of Trinity as a “heterosexually tough” (King & McCaughey) woman in relation to these 4 areas – for example for Editing – “A slow motion, 360 ° Whip Pan around her as she fights the police connotes….” YOU SHOULD aim to identify x2 examples per. Technical area.

  17. Homework: Complete your analysis of the scene from The Matrix answering the following question: How are men and women represented in the extract? Refer to stereotypes in your answer. DUE: Monday 25thMarch
