Why hello there everyone! • We are here to present to you the currently most widely spoken language in the world • English, the lingua franca of today, has influenced the whole world with its massive spread, making its effect visible in all realms • So lets take a trip back in time, and see how English became what it is today

  3. INTRODUCTION • English is the most spoken language on Earth at the moment. Established in a vast amount of countries at the years of the English domain, English are now used as the lingua franca that connects people from all over the world, and also carries a wide range of history with it.

FACTS With blue, the countries where English is an official or de facto official language, or national language, and is spoken natively by the majority of the population With light blue, the countries where it is an official but not primary language 380 million native speakers Spoken by one out of every six people in the world Spoken by over 700 million people as a foreign language English is the language of navigation, aviation and of Catholic Christianity; also the ecumenical language of the World Council of Churches

ORIGINS • English, as we know it right now, used to be completely different in its original form. • A significant number of English words are constructed on the basis of roots from Latin, because Latin in some form was the lingua franca of the Christian Church and of European intellectual life. The language was further influenced by Viking invasions in the 9th and 10th centuries.

  6. THE EVOLUTION • English arose in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England and what is now southeast Scotland. Following the extensive influence of Great Britain and the United Kingdom from the 17th to the mid-20th century, through the British Empire, it has been widely propagated around the world, becoming the leading language of international discourse and the linguafranca in many regions.

  7. CULTURE • Cultural achievements, like the revolution of rock in the 60’s, famous artists, from Shakespeare to Andy Warhol used this language to express themselves and become what they are today. English has been a determining factor of the evolution of modern art

  8. CULTURE-LITERATURE English literature begins with Anglo-Saxo literature, which was written in Old English. For many years, Latin and French were the preferred literary languages of England, but in the medieval period there was a flourishing of literature in Middle English.

  9. CULTURE-LITERATURE • Due to the expansion of English into a world language during the British Empire, literature is now written in English across the world. Writers often associated with England or for expressing Englishness include Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Arnold Bennett, and Rupert Brooke. In the lighter vein, Agatha Christie's mystery novels are outsold only by Shakespeare and The Bible.

Jane Austen (16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817), writer of Pride and Prejudice, who became known for her social commentary and biting irony. Agatha Christie, (15 September 1890 – 12 January 1976) writer of the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, whose characters (HerculePoirot and miss Jane Marple) became popular amongst people of every age.14

  11. CULTURE-MUSIC • Although the modern English music has been really important and has changed the civilization and way of life of many people, the traditional English music isn’t something to write home about.

  12. CULTURE-MUSIC • It was until the tortured black race defied the classical music rules and created something that no one imagined at that time: the blues.

  13. CULTURE-MUSIC • Because of its revolutionary character, the blues was originally hunted by the white Americans. Despite, some adopted the musical basis of the blues, to create what is nowadays known as Rock’n’Roll.

  14. CULTURE-MUSIC • Afterwards, at the early 60’s, a couple of bands transferred the musical center from America to Britain. Using the Rock ’n’ Roll patterns they established the musical categories that are most popular today. The way our whole world expresses itself musically is grossly relevant to the English language.
