  1. “But You, Man of God...” • 1 Timothy 6:11-16 11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

  2. 13 In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you 14 to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords,16 who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.

  3. 1. Flee • 6:11a “ But you, man of God, flee from all this...” • 2. Follow • 6:11b “...and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.” • Gentleness = Strength under control. • John Stott; “We are simply to run from evil as we run from danger, and to run after goodness as we run after success. Give your mind to flight and pursuit.”

  4. 3. Fight • 6:12a “Fight the good fight of the faith.” • 4. Fasten Onto The Faith • 6:12b “Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” • John 17:3 “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”

An Awesome Charge • 6:13 -16 “13 In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you14 to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever.”

A Charge Witnessed by the Father and God the Son • v.13 “In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you ...” • b. A Charge for a Lifetime • v.14,15a “...to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,15 which God will bring about in his own time”

A Charge as Great as God Himself • v.15b, 16 “God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords,16 who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever.” • This majestic benediction extols the sovereignty of God.

  8. Summary • Paul is saying to Timothy “Though your calling is great, the God Who called you is greater--- He will enable you.” • So “man of God” (And all of us as the sons and daughters of God):

  9. Flee evil. • Follow hard after “righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness”. • “Fight the good fight of the faith”. • Fasten Onto, “Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called”.

Accept your Charge before God the Father and Jesus Christ His Son “to keep this command (your call to preach, teach, lead, and shepherd) without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in His own time”. • Man of God do this with an eye to and celebrating the awesome power of your sovereign God who will bring it to pass!” • THIS CHARGE IS FOR ALL OF US!
