Careers in Health Information Technology WHAT ABOUT PATIENT CONSENT? • Policy: NYS law requires that Participating Organizations and Private Practices obtain patient consent before disclosing Protected Health Information (PHI) for non-emergency treatment. • Procedures: • Each Participating Organization and Private Practice must obtain and maintain a written, affirmative Consent before accessing PHI. • This consent will cover any Physician practicing under the tax ID of the Hospital, or the private practice. • Patients can withdraw their consent at any time by filling out a Withdrawal of Consent form. • Providers cannot deny treatment on patients willingness to sign a consent.
