  2. Andrew Worhola • Born August 6, 1928 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania • American painter, printmaker, and filmmaker • Visual Art Movement-Pop Art-attention is focused on familiar images of the popular culture such as billboards, comic strips, magazine advertisements, and supermarket products.

  3. As a Child • 4th child of Slovakian parents who come to the US in 1914 • Catholic • In 3rd grade contracted chorea, a nervous system disease • A complication of scarlet fever • Causes skin pigmentation blotchiness

  4. As a Child continued… • Became a hypochondriac • Fear of hospitals and doctors • Often bed-ridden, became an outcast of peers • Developed a very strong bond with mother • Spent much time drawing, listening to the radio and collecting pictures of movie stars

  5. Early Career • Studied commercial art at School of Fine Arts and Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburg • 1945 started career in New York as a magazine illustrator • RCA records hired Warhol to design album covers and promotional materials

  6. 1960’s • 1962-one man art exhibit in Los Angeles which was the West Coast debut of Pop Art • Began painting iconic American products
