  1. Properties of Light

  2. Electromagnetic Waves • Electromagnetic Waves - energy-carrying waves caused by vibrating electrons • Also know as… All EM Waves are • Light TRANSVERSE!!! • Radiation NEED NO MEDIUM • Photons

  3. Electro Magnetic • EM waves generate electrical and magnetic fields

  4. How fast do EM Waves Travel • EM waves travel at the speed of light. • It is 300,000 kilometers per second or 186,000 miles per second.

  5. The Electromagnetic Spectrum • Radio Waves - communication • Microwaves - used to cook • Infrared - “heat waves” • Visible Light - detected by your eyes • Ultraviolet - causes sunburns • X-rays - penetrates tissue • Gamma Rays - most energetic

  6. The Electromagnetic Spectrum • A range of light waves extending in wavelength from radio waves to gamma rays

  7. The Visible Spectrum A range of light waves extending in wavelength from about 400 to 700 nanometers.

  8. Reflection • Most objects we see reflect light rather than emit their own light.

  9. Refraction • Refraction is the bending of light when it passes from one transparent medium to another. • Refraction is caused by differences in the speed of light in the media.

  10. Diffraction • Bending of Light around an object

  11. Diffraction in Space

  12. Dispersion... • …is the separation of white light into pure colors (ROY G. BIV). • Dispersion Examples: • Prisms • Diffraction Gratings • CD’s • Raindrops

  13. Converging Lenses • A converging lens is thicker in the middle than the edges. • Rays of light that are initially parallel are made to converge (come together) • Rays that move through the center move slower than rays moving through the edges

  14. Diverging Lens • A diverging lens is thinner in the middle than the edges. • Rays of light are made to diverge (move apart)
