  3. Photoshop • It’s a tool but not a substitute for a good image.

  4. NPPA Ethics • Editing should maintain the integrity of the photographic images' content and context. Do not manipulate images or add or alter sound in any way that can mislead viewers or misrepresent subjects.

  6. Getting started • If you have a lot of photos, review them in Adobe Bridge. Click on File - Browse in Photoshop to bring up Bridge.

  8. Cropping • Can better frame an image • Can select a small portion of photo, cut the rest • Ask “does it look right?”

  11. Sizing and resolution • Crop before you size your image • Web requires less detail • Resolution (dots per inch): 72 dpi for Web • Decrease large photo, keep clarity • Maximum Web width: 1,000 pixels • NewsNet photo width: 649 pixels • Thumbnail: 50 X 50 pixels

  12. Toning • Use levels in Photoshop to adjust tone, color • Go to Image/Adjustments/Levels (or Cmd L) • Remember: Don’t alter reality, but if your shot is darker or the color is off from the real thing, you can make subtle adjustments

  13. Adding captions • Go to File/File Info to add captions and credit lines. Write the Caption in the Description box and your credit in the Author box.

  14. Saving your file • Always create a copy – “save as” with new name • Photoshop allows you to save for Web (deletes everything but image data) • Use Tiff if you’re working on it over several days. • Save as Jpg when you’re done. • Usually, medium quality/ 7 is OK • For Soundslides, use “save as” – not save for Web
