Allusion Definition: a reference to another piece of work, famous person, or famous event. Interesting point: it has been said that the most alluded to references are war, Shakespeare and the Bible. Use: to add deeper meaning to your work; to provide context in a shortened manner; to make connections for the reader; imagery. Be careful though – some readers may not be familiar with the work you are referring to, defeating the purpose of using an allusion!
Examples of Allusion Explain what the following allusions are describing. • I was surprised his nose didn’t grow like Pinocchio’s! • It’s raining so hard we better load up the ark! • When she lost her job, she acted like Scrooge and didn’t buy anything! • Someday, I will find my prince, no matter how many frogs I meet along the way.
