  2. Objectives • Convince students of the necessity of learning about end of life care issues • Utilize new ethics course and director • Address gaps in education first and second year • Pharmacology • Interview and Communication • Generate excitement for new elective • Assist with new elective

  3. What is currently available? Curriculum Based • M1 Ethics Course - lecture/discussion and final exam based on Advanced Directives • M1 Behavioral Science Course - 1 hour lecture on death and dying • “Breaking Bad News” Workshop 3rd year Lunch Lectures • Dr. Marschke - Pain Management • “Breaking Bad News”

  4. I. Ethics Course • Dr. Flanagan-Klygis, new course director; revamped course • Continue emphasis on Advanced Directives • New Case Studies • Nutrition/Hydration • Quality of Life Issues

  5. II. Symposium • Step 1: Lunch Lecture - Introduction to Hospice • Students basically come for the free lunch • Must convince them and excite them that this topic is relevant • Need for dynamic speaker • To discuss: • Hospice Philosophy; Team-based work • Need for student training in communication

  6. Once we have caught interest… • Step 2: An Evening with Hospice • View “To Live Until I Die” and dinner • Four 20-30 minute small group discussions led by experienced instructors • Pain Management • Psychosocial Issues • Complementary and Alternative Medicine • Breaking Bad News

  7. III. Interdisciplinary Palliative Care Elective • NIH grant; University-wide fourth year elective in palliative care • Details currently being worked out • Online course with six modules, simulation lab, discussions, and clinical experiences • CCE ultimately decides how course will be implemented
