The Elephantine Papyri provide valuable insights into a Jewish community established around 650 BCE, during the reign of Menashe, to assist Pharaoh. Known as Yeb in antiquity, these papyri detail the life of the community from 495 to 399 BCE, highlighting its eventual decline in the mid-4th century BCE. Excavations at Elephantine have led to the reconstruction of a Jewish temple dating back to 408 BCE. Notably, Yedoniah wrote to Bagoas, the Governor of Samaria and Judah, requesting orders for rebuilding the Temple of YHWH in Elephantine.
