  1. pygmy possum an endangered species By jess

  2. where is the pygmy possum found?? pygmy possums are found in NSW and Victoria in alpine and sub-alpine areas. In NSW, they are only found in small areas in the Kuziosco National Park and in the Victorian high country near Mt Hotham. Two of the four main areas where they are found are in major ski resorts with a high skier population making it even harder for pygmy possums to survive. pygmy possums live on the ground in and around large boulders which are common in the snowy mountains. They are the only Australian mammal living above the winter snow line. Because they are so endangered, National Parks have provided a safe and protected area within Australia’s major ski resorts

  3. main features of the pygmy possums lifecycle the pygmy possums life expectancy is 12 for females and 5 for males. The breeding season is from October to December but can sometimes vary in NSW depending on when the snow melts. Pygmy possums have been known to make a small nest out of moss

  4. why is the pygmy possum under threat?? • Loss of habitat mainly due to the ski industry • Non-native predators such as foxes and feral cats invade their habitat and kill them all • People need to be educated so that they can tell the difference between a pygmy possum and a rat. People often mistake pygmy possums for vermin • Bushfires wiping out their food source and habitat • Arsenic residues have been found in Bogong Moths. The moths are part of the pygmy possums food source • Global warming is upsetting the natural balance of the pygmy possums habitat. The heating of the atmosphere results in snow melt resulting in adverse changes to the pygmy possums environment

  5. what can we do to save the pygmy possum?? Pygmy possums can be encouraged to survive if the following actions are enforced: • Foxes and feral cats should be removed as they are the most unforgiving predator to the pygmy possum • The use of rat traps and poisons should be used with extreme caution in areas around pygmy possum habitats • Deliberately lit or careless bushfires pose a significant threat and therefore must be avoided particularly in the summer months • Skiers and boarders must always avoid restricted areas set aside for pygmy possum protection • Reduce carbon emissions to limit global warming. Global warming will eventually eliminate snow cover in the snowy mountains and destroy pygmy possum habitat and lead to their extinction
