  1. Elements and Compounds Unit 1: Measurement & Matter

  2. Matter • Substance that has mass and takes up space • More categories

  3. 2 Categories • Pure Substances • Mixtures

  4. Elements • Simplest form of a pure substance • Cannotbe split up into two or more simpler substances by chemical means • Consist of only 1 kind of atom

  5. Examples of Elements: • Hydrogen • Carbon • Lithium • Gold

  6. Element Symbols • Can be 1-2 Letters • 1stletter is always capital and the 2nd is always lowercase • Examples: C O Na Ca Carbon Oxygen Sodium Calcium

  7. Elements • Can be classified EVEN FURTHER into 2 categories: Molecules Atoms Are made up 2+ atoms of the same element chemically bonded together Is the smallest particle of an element and has the same chemical properties of the element We are the same!!

  8. H2 O3

  9. For example, hydrogen is H2. Ozone is O3. Molecules Very few elements exists as atomsMost elements exist as molecules.

  10. Chemical Symbols of Elements Chemists use symbols to represent elements. For example, O represents oxygen while Fe represents iron.

  11. Elements Quiz • Wednesday 9/24

  12. Compounds • Consist of fixed number of 2+ DIFFERENTelements that are chemically combined • Can be split up into two or more simpler substances by chemicalmeans

  13. + = Compound

  14. Compounds Formulas written for compounds using chemical symbols of elements Numbers next to letters indicate how many atoms of each element is present Examples: H2O CO2 C6H12O6 and HCl

  15. Compounds • Have chemical and physical properties that are different from its component elements

  16. Cu H H What is a compound? A compound is a substance which is made up of two or more elementschemically combined together. Qn: Is this a compound? Qn: Is this a compound? Qn: Is this a compound? O It only contains one type of element. O It is not chemically combined. It only contains one type of element. H H O

  17. O N H H H H H So, what is a compound then? Water H2O Ammonia gas NH3 Consists of two or more elements And They are chemically combined together!

  18. Review

  19. Elements atom molecules cannot Periodic Table • A pure substance containing only one kind of ______________. • Can be present in groups of identical atoms called ___________________ • An element _______________be separated into simpler materials • Over 100 existing elements are listed and classified on the ________________________.

  20. Compounds atoms chemically cannot different • A pure substance containing two or more kinds of ________________. • The atoms are __________________combined in some way. • Compounds ___________________be separated by physical means. They can be separated chemically. • The properties of a compound are usually _______________than the properties of the elements it contains.
