  2. The 1st Globe Theater • First theater was made with timber in 1599 • Built by Shakespeare’s paying company, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men • Built for Shakespeare’s plays to perform onstage

  3. Why is there is a 2nd Globe Theater? • The first theater was burned down because the theatrical cannon misfired and ignited the wooden beams and started to burn down • Went up into the flames during the performance of Henry the Eighth • 2nd one was rebuilt in June 1614 at the same site and closed in 1642 because of the Puritans closed down all the theaters in London

  4. Format of the Theater • Three stories, open air amphitheatre and could hold up to 3000 spectators • There was also a roof called the heavens because it was painted with clouds and the sky • A trapdoor came from the “heavens” which was used for some of the performances that needed balconies or upper space

  5. Who came? • The “groundlings” would watch the performance in the “pit” which is right in front of the stage • Many nobles and even the queen came to see the plays of Shakespeare in the Globe Theater • Modern Globe was reconstructed named Shakespeare’s Globe opened in 1997
