Definition • Out-of-Control growth • Spread of abnormal cells • The cells accumulate and form tumors • The tumors destroy normal tissue • The tumors spread and continue to destroy normal tissue • Many tumors may form a colony
Importance • Because half of all men and a third of all women get a form of cancer • Millions of people have cancer right now • It has been around since the dawn of time • Lives have been ruined and taken away by cancer • It slowly eats up the body
Causes • Having a better lifestyle can reduce the chance of cancer • Smoking gives you a higher chance of cancer • Dieting reduces the chance of cancer • Cancer is caused by cells not following their normal pattern of growth and growing out of control
Cases in U.S. and World • Men have a 50% chance of getting a form of cancer • Women have a 33% chance of getting a form of cancer • Some cases of cancers are, Lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer • Smokers and overweight people have a bigger chance of getting cancer
Symptoms • Fatigue • Anxiety and depression • Skin problems • Breathing difficulties • Sore mouth and throat • Eating problems • Swollen ankles and legs
Prognosis • Most likely the person’s hair will be removed • They will have to have chemotherapy for the rest of your life • Most people become traumatized • You will have a fifty percent chance of dying if you are found to carry the diseases.
Current Research • The most recent research on cancer is surgery • During the surgery they remove the entire tumor and all parts of the tumor. • They also use radiation to cure cancer • They use hormone therapy for cancer • People also get chemotherapy to cure cancer
Person’s History with Colon Cancer • He is 84 • He has two tumors • Had colon-a-scopy • He had a colostomy bag attached to his side • He got skinny • Needed to be fed with fluid • Going into surgery next Tuesday
Summary • It is amazing to discover the new treatments that have been made for cancer and I know that soon all cancer that appear will be curable. • Until a cure is found millions of people will still die and people lives will still become worse because the awful disease. • Cancer is one of the worst diseases you can get.
