The Water Safety Conference held in Kuching, Malaysia, from November 2-4, 2010, brought together experts from Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-Water) and the Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA) of Thailand to discuss and scale up partnership activities focused on improving water quality management. Key highlights include the introduction of a comprehensive Water Safety Plan, enhanced water quality monitoring using SCADA systems, and the identification of issues in production and distribution systems. The collaboration aims to replicate successful strategies across multiple waterworks to ensure safe and efficient water distribution in their regions. ###

PARTNERSHIP BACKGROUND Water Safety Conference November 2-4 2010, Kuching, Malaysia
PARTNERSHIP BACKGROUND Implemented with support from USAID/Eco-Asia • Water Quality Control • Critical problem of water quality (turbidity, low chlorine residual) • Water Quality Monitoring • SCADA system in preparation Water Safety Conference November 2-4 2010, Kuching, Malaysia

KEY ACTIVITIES Water Safety Conference November 2-4 2010, Kuching, Malaysia
INDICATIVE RESULTS • Drafting of Water Safety Plan for KhonKhaenwaterwork • Identification of issues in production and distribution systems through the Plan and K-Water feedback • Need for better monitoring • Improving production processes to better remove turbidity at Baan Ko Ta • Enhancing chemical feeding process (e.g. feeding rate, flow meter installation, chemical stabilization tank, SOP) • Installing tube settlers in sedimentation tanks • Optimizing filtration (e.g. backwashing frequencies, new media, cover, SOP, C x T values, monitoring) • Ensuring safe water distribution • Installing chlorine booster pump in Rattanapa pump station • Increase pipe flushing frequency • Taking and monitoring regular samples in furthest points of network Water Safety Conference November 2-4 2010, Kuching, Malaysia
INDICATIVE RESULTS • Water quality monitoring using SCADA • Installing Water Quality Monitoring systems at raw and treated water (instruments, software) • Renovating SCADA central control room in Baan KoTa WTP including upgrades of communication system for all stations; hardware and software; and SCADA system testing • Installing communication system for headquarter, regional office and WTP office; test run for control and monitoring; • Preparing data base and reporting mechanisms Water Safety Conference November 2-4 2010, Kuching, Malaysia
SCALING-UP • Trained staff at Khon Khaen facility to share with colleagues in Region 6 • SOPs on SCADA and production treatment systems (chemical feeding table, filtration backwash) developed for Khon Khaen facility with help by K-Water to be used as templates for other waterworks as they plan to improve operations • Selected scientists/engineers from each region attended specialized training on optimizing production and distribution processes by K-Water to help disseminate good practices (Training-of-Trainer approach) • Baan Ko Ta WTP will be used as model for other waterworks through site visits • PWA to roll-out Water Safety Plan development in 10 additional waterworks in 2011 to help with water quality management improvements Water Safety Conference November 2-4 2010, Kuching, Malaysia
Replication of Water Safety Plan Water safety plan ,2010 The success of Water Safety Plan development and implementation (supported by USAID/ECO-Asia) convinced PWA Governor to approve the replication of Water Safety Plan development in 10 waterworks across the country.
