  2. Context • “Video games have more potential as teaching tools than people realize. There is now a large divide between games meant to educate and games meant to entertain. Somewhere along the line many educational games gave up being fun and games made to entertain gave up the opportunity to benefit there audience. • Can we make games educational and fun? This is where Tangential learning comes in. Studies show people assimilate information better when they study topics they are interested in rather than what they are forced to learn”. (Portnow, 2008) • Explore the issue above select a client and identify an appropriate area of learning that could be supported by the development of a game based on the Tangential learning idea. • Evidence for assessment will be completed during the 7 weeks (plus 2 weeks holiday) that you have been studying the applications and processes that support this unit of work. • Other assessments that are going to be assessed throughout this standard and the next will be AS90685 Demonstrate techniques in information and communication technology (4 credits) • You are required to identify a client issue, use project management tools to plan your time, develop a brief, develop and model a conceptual design.   5. Client Evaluation/Scenario • I have decided to use my younger sister Sheridan as my client. She wants me to make her a game based around animals. Corey Climo 2009

  6. Issue • “Can we make games educational and fun?” (Portnow 2008) I think yes. Games can be fun and educational with the use of Tangential learning. For example, for my client I am going to make a game that ties in with their interests/hobbies and I could add in facts or information relating to their chosen interest/hobby. Corey Climo 2009

Needs/Opportunities/Constraints Needs: • Internet Access • Constant contact with my client • Access to programs such as game maker, fireworks, gimp ect • Knowledge and experience of game maker in advanced mode Opportunities • I am wanting to narrow down the concept of animals for the idea for my game as it is too broad. Constraints • I am aware the software available to use isn’t exactly high tech so I realise my final product isn’t going to be a full-scale game.   18. Initial Brief • I am to design and create a game for my client Sheridan (sister) which includes tangential learning. Her chosen topic is facts on Cats. I have found that she enjoys playing platform/arcade type games so I am going to base my project around this information. Corey Climo 2009
