  1. VSPR Molecule Shapes

  2. What is VSPR? • Valence Shell Electron Repulsion • The idea states that covalent bonds & lone electron pairs like to stay apart because they have the same charge • Explains why molecules have their shapes

  3. Hybridization • S & p orbitals mix to form a hybrid orbital • This mix creates different angles which changes the shapes of the molecules based on the number of atoms & valence electrons

  4. Shapes • Linear – the atoms form a straight line

  5. Shapes • Linear – the atoms form a straight line • Bent – the molecule looks bent

  6. Shapes • Linear – the atoms form a straight line • Bent – the molecule looks bent • Trigonal Planar – looks like a peace sign

  7. Shapes • Linear – the atoms form a straight line • Bent – the molecule looks bent • Trigonal Planar – looks like a peace sign • Trigonal Pyramidal - a squished pyramid

  8. Shapes • Linear – the atoms form a straight line • Bent – the molecule looks bent • Trigonal Planar – looks like a peace sign • Trigonal Pyramidal - a squished pyramid • Tetrahedral – a 4 faced pyramid

  9. Finding the Shape • See the flow chart handout • How many “things” are attached to the central atom? • Double bonds still count as one “thing” • Lone pairs count the same as an attached atom

  10. Any Questions?
