  1. A Child Called “I T” By: Dave Pelzer Jessika Conley-Levesque

  2. Characters

  3. Character Descriptions * DAVE PELZER : Dave was a young boy who’s only wish was to be loved truly by his mom and to escape from the torturous events that continued to occur to him. He was a scared little boy who for years was abused by his mother. He was not a healthy boy where he was only allowed to eat on occasion and where he was beat continuously. He had many scars and bruises that covered his body. Dave was very lonely and depressed but had dreams that someday he would be rescued as well as someday becoming a pilot, and that he did. In this book Dave ranges from many different ages as he tells his story. He has blue eyes and blondish hair. Dave was the third child out of 4. MOTHER (Catherine Roerva):Mother was an alcoholic with an illness which doctors say could have had BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER.

  4. She is a women full of anger and hatred. When she is known as nice in the novel she is referred to as Mom but as things progress to the abusive activities she is known as mother. She is said to be overweight brown frizzy hair and defiantly doesn’t take care of herself like she used to. Mother was an incredibly terrible person who got away with what she did to her son. She defiantly had issues. Mr. Hansen: Although Mr. Hansen only played a small role in the beginning of the novel I find that he was very important to this story. He was the man who took initiative finally and called the police with Dave's story. He was the principle at Dave's school and with yet another final report from the nurse he decided to take action and help rescue the poor boy. He was a man of determination and hope.

  5. Character Map/Graph Took Dave out of the county. The Officer called mother to inform her Dave would not be coming home. The abuser Alcoholic Dave's survival was very critical in this novel. He tells his story of what he went through and how he escapes. The 5 people mentioned were the people Dave chose to mention in this part of the trilogy. Mother Officer Smith He calls the police on mother for the abuse he’s discovered and saves Dave's life. DAVE Mr. Hansen Nurse Father Principle Nurse informs Mr. Hansen about her findings Fire Fighter When home mother was calm so Dave was glad when father came home. Examines Dave for bruises, cuts and scars

  6. Continuously puts on a show when people are around but when know one is around she does horrific things to her son Mother Slowly grow apart with their differences Used to be a very nice person and for some reason changed Father The had a special bond that mother didn’t know much about Dave

  7. Character Cast * I personally wouldn't make a choice in turning this novel into a film. Why would you want to watch the horrific events that occurred during this child’s life. I don’t believe anyone would truly be capable of playing the role of a child who went through what Dave did, or be the mother and pretend to do those things to her child. Dave pelzer (12-14)- Miles Heizer I think that Miles Heizer would be good for this role because he sort of looks like Dave in his younger pictures but needs a hair cut. He also seems to be the kind of child actor that could potentially act the way one would when being in the position that Dave was put in.He has played in the shows ER., Cold Case, Bones, CSI and many more exclusive shows like that. He would know how to act scared and timid. Dave Pelzer (15-18)- Alexander Ludwig Alexander could be an intense actor being Dave. He has played in movies such as : The Seeker, A little thing called murder and Eve of the fire horse. By being the older version of Dave he would be ably to slowly grow and come out of his shell and come to terms with what has been done to him.

  8. Mother ( Catherine Roervra Pelzer)-Stephanie Lapointe Stephanie Lapointe would be perfect for the mother. She has already played an abusive mothers role in the movie Aurore. She has the dark hair that mother has and is just simply able to be who her character is. The Nurse- Courtney Cox ( Younger) Courtney Cox is a genuine person. She is very nice and has played many roles in her life. Being the nurse would be great for her because she would be helping Dave and make it her goal that he got the help that he needed. She’s a happy person and that was what the nurse was.

  9. Mr. Hansen (principle)-Jeffery Jones Jeffery Jones has played as a principle before. He looks like a principle and he just has that face expression that he wants to get business done which is what Mr. Hansen plans on doing when he discovers David has been continuing to be abused at home. Officer Smith-Mark Harmon Mark is the perfect choice for the officer. He is assertive in his roles and he’s a great “cop” in NCIS. He wouldn’t have a problem portraying the role of basically saving Dave's life and taking him away from his mother.

  10. Writing Style

  11. Descriptive Writing *” She counts the slash-like marks on my face, looking for any she might have missed in the past” page 7 *“Except for the short duration of a fishing trip, things with mother were touch and go, or smash and dash- she would smash me, and I would dash to the solitude of the basement” page 47 *”It became so bad at times, I had no strength to crawl away- even if it meant saving my life” page 29 * “ After he said goodbye to Ron and Sam, he knelt down, held my shoulders tightly and told me to be a “ good boy”. Mother stood behind him with her arms crossed….” Page 33 *”Father stayed away most of the time, and I continued to be the scapegoat upon which mother vented her frustrations.” page 122 *”My brothers seemed to accept my presence, and I felt a feeling of friendship and warmth with them that I thought had been buried forever.” page 94

  13. Plot

  14. What was the climax? For me the climax of this story happened in the first chapter. Dave is running late because of his mother so when he enters the school the Nurse notices him and invites him into her office. She than exams Dave again and discovers more bruises and cuts on his body. The nurse than consults with the principle and the principle decides to call the police. Dave is taken into the custody of the officer and that’s when everything changes in Dave’s life. If the principle would have never called the police than things could have changed very drastically. Dave would have still been in his mothers custody and he could have very easily of been killed. This point in the novel was very extreme. It saved this child’s life.

  15. Today is March 5th, 1973 in Daly City California. A young boy was taken into police custody today due to reports of severe abuse at home. As I quickly tried to speak to the principle of the school there isn't much information being discussed at this point in time. This boy who’s name is disclosed has been living in a hell whole and with reports from the school nurse has finally met his freedom. He will be taken out of the county this afternoon. I will continue with this report as I gather more information.

  16. Conflict

  17. Conflict There was really only one conflict in this book. Dave’s relationship with his mother and his survival for his life. Dave was punished and incredible amount of times in many severe ways. One time he didn't finish his chores on time and his mother wouldn't allow him to eat for 10 days. That’s ridiculous. She could have let him eat. Another time Dave rebelled and played on the grass at school. His mother made him put his hand through the flames of the gas stove and almost accomplished forcing him to lay down on that stove. Dave’s father was his savior for the longest time. He didn't believe what mother was doing was right but he couldn’t do anything about it. He was rarely home, always at work. When he was home he helped Dave with the chores and tried to sneak food to him.

  18. Theme

  19. A Child Called “It” The title choice A CHILD CALLED “IT” was a perfect choice for the title of this book. Dave , the young boy who is rescued from his abusive mother, was continuously called “it” by his mother. Dave no longer had a real name. By being called “it” Dave's mother figured she was getting to him and it was her way of attacking her son.
