  4. Soft Drummers Singapore What do we do?(Our Vision & our culture) • To be the BIGGEST, not-for-profit drum community in Singapore • We organize events based on non-monetary exchange of drum knowledge, ideas, equipment • Identify & nurture drum talents in Singapore • We strive to be neutral, and to welcome everyone, regardless of race, language, religion, gender, music genre preference and personal bias

  5. Soft Drummers Singapore PAST – PRESENT - FUTURE

  6. Soft Drummers Singapore History First known Drum “Exchange" occured in 2000 Basically a professional working drummer getting together a bunch of hungry (for knowledge) drummers Shahferi (Ahpek) Birdnesty (ernest) – ethan ong’s uncle Luke chen Shavin (turbochicken) Myself (alfe) Zain (biz2020) Blissy (Hairi) Alvin Ohfunk (Prakash), Ernest (slamfunk), therocker2112 (a lawyer), swingstar (frank) & the list goes on...

  7. Soft Drummers Singapore History (continued) On-line Drum Communities come and gone: · Drum Collective of Singapore (1999) · Singapore Drummer Circle (2002) >> Fast forward to 2007 (March) Eric (Rudimental Drummer) organizes 1st Soft Drummers Meetup

  8. Soft Drummers Singapore History (continued) Many lessons learnt from years of organizing exchange - Flame wars - Personal agendas, hidden motives - Try to learn from others, but don’t share - Lack of direction / content to keep attendees interested alfe: "i consider myself a proud student born from the new order of drum education approach"

  9. Soft Drummers Singapore The Present (2007) • Prevalence of internet and multiple learning resources • We are not tied to a single teacher, drum system or school of thought

  10. Soft Drummers Singapore The Future (2008 & beyond) • A new wave of students who take charge of their own learning and development • Multiple teachers; learn from a teacher until point of saturation and move on

  11. Soft Drummers Singapore Where do we fit into all this?

  12. Soft Drummers Singapore On-line communities: Pros & Cons Pros - many people gathered together - breaking down barriers - knowledge can be compiled and left there 'forever' for others to learn Cons - hiding behind a nick - on-line flaming wars, backstabbers, hydra (multiple entities gang up on one) - lack of focus & direction

  13. Soft Drummers Singapore Soft Drummer Meetups The numbers Most recent meetup (August 2007) - 50 and growing Can we get to 100? 200? (and beyond) Can we sustain the growth? Can we sustain the quality & content?
