Objectives • In line with an endeavor to preserve the human resources of the company and pursuing the efforts in order to secure the safety of its personnel and protect company’s properties, with an objective of minimizing the number of road accidents, KOC (Kuwait Oil Company) has enforced and applied some initiatives in the company’s premises. • This paper gives an idea about the statistics of Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVAs), case studies and the initiatives that Kuwait Oil Company has adopted in minimizing MVAs. This paper also gives a brief about the policies, procedures that are being followed and implemented in the company.

Introduction North Kuwait Kuwait Oil Company is a giant E&P company with its activities spreaded all over the Kuwait, with 21 Gathering Centers, 4 Booster Stations in three producing assets NK, S&EK & WK, with its head office in Ahmadi. KOC has about 4900 employees. Approx. 20,488 contractor employees are working for KOC. West Kuwait South & East Kuwait Employees & contractors who are doing business with KOC had to travel long distances to meet the operational requirements. On monthly basis about 814,568 Kilometers are being driven by KOC employees. Where as about 7,016,507 Kilometers are being driven by Contractor employees.

Impact of Speed Cameras: October 05 (before speed camera) • Used hand held radar for 1 hour at Magwa road • 299 KOC vehicles over speeding • 1 vehicle within speed limit. • Percentage violating: 99.6% March 06 (after speed cameras) • 257 violating vehicles on KOC Roads. • Percentage of violating vehicles: 51%. Result: No. of violating vehicles dropped by 49%

The current approved process of handling the violations at KOC • First violation: Verbally discuss with the employee • Second violation: Discuss again with the employee and issue a file note • Third violation: Disciplinary action will be taken as per the Company personnel policy: • Caution • Written warning • Final written warning • Dismissal

During the year 2005: 1 Million vehicles 3.1 Million violations 56 235 Accidents 451 Fatalities During the Year 2006: (Jan to June): 250 Fatalities (Approx) Do you know? Among these 56, 235 accidents that occurred in 2005, only 0.97 caused by over speeding & 94% caused by distraction Speeding is a single threat that is in its process of being managed, there are other major threats which unfortunately finding its way to reach a major event without control

  18. Conclusion • Let us join hands in bringing awareness among the people to preserve the human resources and pursuing the efforts in order to secure the safety of the personnel and protect our properties, with an objective of minimizing the number of road accidents.
