  2. Background • Pakistan has a population of over 140 million • It has over 2 dozen medical colleges • Very few medical colleges have research curricula • Hardly any has formal research training • Only three Pakistani medical journals are indexed in Medline

  3. Background • There are close to 10,000 physicians of Pakistani origin in the US • Many more are children of Pakistani-American parents • Very few new residents are coming to the US for residency training • Many of us have helped these persons individually

  4. Objectives • Identify, encourage and mentor young investigators of Pakistani origin, whether in Pakistan or the US. • Serve as a liaison or co-investigators for such investigators with collaborators in the US. • Conduct regular seminars and meetings to enhance medical research. • Conduct regular career counseling sessions or meetings for potential young investigators who would like to know more about, or embark upon an academic career.

  5. Objectives • Serve as a resource center for speakers which may be utilized for meetings of Pakistani physicians worldwide, and other medical and/or research meetings. • Serve as a resource center for help in devising, designing, and implementing research policies for Government of Pakistan, or other nations that may benefit from it. • Serve as a resource center for young Pakistani medical graduates who intend to come to the US for training and research purposes.

  6. Membership • Academic rank at a medical, dental, nursing or public health school at the Assistant Professor level or higher. • Five or more first authored publications in peer reviewed journals. • Fifteen or more total publications in peer reviewed journals. • Active teaching of students, residents or fellows at an accredited medical, dental, nursing or public health institution. • A full time, active administrative or managerial post at a medical, dental, nursing or public health school or research institution.

  7. Membership • May be waived in certain circumstances: • Full time academic rank at the level of a Professor or higher at a recognized medical, dental, nursing or public health school. • Recommendation by two-third of the trustees OR two-thirds of the current members.

  8. Current Status • Members are being added to the core of ARC • ARC has been successfully registered as a non-profit corporation in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania • Application for tax exempt status shall be forthcoming

  12. Current Achievements Abdul Nadir, Good Samaritan Hospital • Liver Workshop Civil Hospital Karachi, 9-02 • 4-day course given to 12 postgraduate students • Started a research program at GSRMC. First research assistant hired is a Pakistani physician awaiting residency

  13. Current Achievements • Modest: • Mentoring: • We have successfully secured FOUR residency positions per year for AKU graduates at UPMC in an International Scholars Program • Two non-AKU graduates will likely be interviewed as well

  14. What We Ask • Spread the word around • Identify potential members • Support a trip of the UPMC-Shadyside Program Director and one additional faculty to Pakistan – cost ~$5,000 • Use ARC as a resource for speakers, thought leaders, researchers

What We Ask • Even if cannot, or decide not to become a member, tell us: • If you can arrange an elective for a Pakistani student • If you can arrange an externship • If you can identify potential residency positions • If you would support the ARC to present their program to other US medical schools
