It encompasses training in teaching, learning, assessment, and course design, alongside portfolio assignments and reflections. Participants must meet standards in research, teaching, and management over a three-year probation period, receiving support from mentors and tailored training. Strands of the Teaching and Learning Programme • For new lecturers • For contract research staff • For postgraduates (PGs) who teach
CENTRAL Teaching Learning Assessment Course Design DEPARTMENT Mentor support Observation of individual + feedback Subject specific training for PGs Programme for PGs
Issues in PG Work • Bristol University as a ‘research’ university • Some staff do not value/enjoy teaching • Lack of time (or perceived lack) • No specific person in faculties/depts responsible for PGs • No system for ensuring that PGs who teach are qualified
Ways Forward (1) • More links between the ‘central’ staff and the person in each department who is responsible for overseeing PG teaching • Notes from discussion of PG observation sent to T&L staff
Ways Forward (2) • Mentor training for staff • T&L staff to give support in leading departmental training for PGs • Encourage PGs who later become permanent lecturers to become mentors • Build a data base of lecturers who show strong commitment to T&L (to mentor other PGs )
