  1. 1 Corinthians 14:33-40 For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints, the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church. Or was it from you that the word of God came? Or are you the only ones it has reached? If anyone thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord. If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized. So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. But all things should be done decently and in order.

  6. 7. Context Argument: • Women in the Corinthian Church were part of the congregation that is seeking to weigh the validity of tongues and prophesies expressed • Women in the church were speaking out and getting involved in the judging of theses gifts (possibly in a disruptive manner) • Women in the Corinthian church were in this way taking authority over the gathering • Women in the Corinthian church need to realize that this action is out of order in the worship of the church • Women in the Corinthian church need to show God’s established creative order by: • not exercising this authority in the church (be silent) AND  • expressing this order in the home as well  (ask husbands) • This is a principle that is part of God’s creative order throughout the OT (“The Law”) • Male headship in home and church is to be upheld in all the churches as an expression of God’s creative order
