A brief history of foreign languagteaching in China. • Let Ss read the materials silently to have a general idea of history of foreign language teaching in China. then fill in the form: 2. Designing principles for National English Curriculum Introduce the six designing principles for National English Curriculum for Nine-year Compulsory Education. T explains the meaning of them to help Ss have a good understanding of them.

  7. 2.1 Lead in activities • Aim for educating all students, and emphasize quality –oriented education • Promote learner-centredness, and respect individual differences • Develop competence-based objectives , and allow flexibility and adaptability • pay close attention to the learning process, and advocate experiential learning and participation • Attach particular importance to formative assessment, and give special attention to the development of competence • Optimize learning resources, and maximise opportunities for learning and using the language .

  11. 3.2 Practice • Organize Ss to practise writing teaching objectives according to the descriptions of teaching goals from different syllabuses since1978. • Examples : • a. It aims to help Ss to develop good learning habits and form effective learning strategies. • b. It aims to increase Ss awareness of cultural differences between the East and the West. • c. It aims to develop Ss ’reading and self-learning abilities.

  12. 4. Challenges facing English language teachers • With the implementation of new English curriculum, English language teachers will face many challenges. There are many difficulties and problems identified by some English teachers: • Teaching ideas and methods are out of date. • Wrong expectation from the public • Teaching for the purpose of testing • Teachers’ lack of training • Ss high scores vs. low abilities • Lack of professional training on theories and practice of education and on ELT 4.1 Lead in activities

  13. 4.2 Presentation In the process of curriculum reform, how do teachers deal with changes and challenges? • Have an open mind towards different kinds of ideas and approaches to teaching. • Be willing to try out new ideas • Try to find opportunities to attend training, seminars on Language teaching and observations of teaching. • Use the resources available to help you with teaching and self-learning. • Reflect on your own teaching and beliefs about teaching

Conclusion • In this unit, we have a brief overview of the history of English language teaching in China with an emphasis on the development in last two decades, we also discussed the designing principles and its goals and objectives of new English Curriculum. Facing challenges, it is normal that teachers feel pressed in the time of change. However, we need understand the reasons for the change and be prepared to undertake them .
