  2. SLEEVE (ONE INCH IS DIVIDED INTO 40 EQUAL DIVISIONS, EACH OF WHICH EQUALS 1/40 IN(O.O25 IN) EVERY FOURTH LINE IS LONGER THAN THE OTHERS, WHICH INDICATES 0.100 IN DISTANCE) THIMBLE ( DIVIDED INTO 25 EQUAL DIVISIONS . ONE DIVISION EQUALS 1/25 OF 0.025 IN OR 0.001 IN. ) INCH MICROMETER

  3. INCH MICROMETER SLEEVE THIMBLE 0.001 0.025 0.100

  4. TO READ AN INCH MICROMETER 1. Note the last number showing on the sleeeve. Multiply it by 0.100. 2. Note the number of small lines visible to the right of the last number shown. Multiply it by 0.025. 3. Add the number of divisions on the thimble from zero to the line that coincides with the index line on the sleeve. 4. Add steps 1 through 3 to get the total reading. SLEEVE THIMBLE 0.001 0.025 0.100

  5. # 2 is shown on the sleeve……. 2 x 0.100 = 0.200 3 lines are visible past the number 3 x 0.025 = 0.075 # 13 line on thimble coincides with the index line ………………….. 13 x 0.001 = 0.013 Total Reading ………………………………………. 0.288 SLEEVE THIMBLE 0.001 0.025 0.100

  6. TO READ AN INCH VERNIER MICROMETER 1. Note the last number showing on the sleeeve. Multiply it by 0.100. 2. Note the number of small lines visible to the right of the last number shown. Multiply it by 0.025. 3. Add the number of divisions on the thimble from zero to the line that coincides with the index line on the sleeve. 4. Note the line on the vernier scale that coincides with a line on the thimble. This line indicates the number of ten-thousandths (0.0001) 5. Add steps 1 through 4 to get the total reading. 0.0001

  7. # 2 is shown on the sleeve……. 2 x 0.100 = 0.200 1 line is visible past the number 1 x 0.025 = 0.025 # 11 line on thimble just past thes index line ………………….. 11 x 0.001 = 0.011 # 3 line on the vernier scale coincides with a line (# 17) on the thimble 3 x 0.0001 = 0.0003 0.200 0.025 0.011 0.0003 Total Reading …. 0.2363 0.0001

  9. The large # 1 on the bar = 1.000 The small # 4 4 x 0.100 = 0.400 One line is visible past the # 4 1 x 0.025 = 0.025 The 11th line of the vernier scale coincides with a line on the bar 11 x 0.001 = 0.011 Total reading 1.436 in A 25 division VERNIER CALIPER

  10. A 50 division VERNIER CALIPER The large # 1 on the bar = 1.000 The small # 4 4 x 0.100 = 0.400 One line is visible past the # 4 1 x 0.050 = 0.050 The 14th line of the vernier scale coincides with a line on the bar 14 x 0.001 = 0.014 Total reading 1.464 in
