  2. Cooperative Learning Activity • Background Two of the world’s major religions Hinduism and Buddhism were found in India. Hinduism emerged from the belief system of the Aryan people who settled in India after 1500 BC. Buddhism’s founder, Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha or “Enlightened One,” lived in northern India in the sixth century BC. Although some similarities between the two exist, each belief system has its own unique concepts and approach. By creating and sharing posters for each religion you will learn more about them.

  3. Directions • Use the information in your textbook and any other sources you can find to create separate posters for Hinduism and Buddhism. • One half of the group should be assigned to each religion. Posters should describe all aspects of the religion and include illiustrations

Directions (cont) • Include this information on the Hinduism poster: Brahman dharma Atman Yoga reincarnation Brahma Karma Vishnu Siva (Shiva) The caste system • Include this information on the Buddhism poster: Founder Four Noble Truths Nirvana view of the caste system Stupas quotes of Siddhartha Bodhi Middle Path (Eightfold path)

  5. Directions (cont) • Share your poster with the other half of the group and test their understanding with a series of five questions prepared in advance.
