Project Objective • Achieve complete adoption of the NHS Number as documented in the Safer Practice Notice[1] and NHS Number Information Standards (DSCN) for General Practice[2]& Secondary Care[3]. • Conformance to SPN reported to DoH by Risk Management Progress so far • Audit has been undertaken to establish the current situation against the Requirements listed in the Information Standards • Audit Report produced for General Practice, Secondary Care & Commissioning • Action Plan produced for General Practice (see extract), Secondary Care & Commissioning • NHS Number Survey for the General Public & Patients • Various NHS Number Tools produced [1] NPSA Safer Practice Notice: June 2009 Ref: NPSA/2009/SPN002 (replaces NPSA/2008/SPN001 issued September 2008) [2] ISB: Information Standards Board: NHS Number Standard for General Practice (England): DCS Notice 31/2008: Issued Dec 2008 [3] ISB: Information Standards Board: NHS Number Standard for Secondary Care (England): DCS Notice 32/2008: Issued Dec 2008

Action Plan Extract • MUST Definition: Is an absolute requirement of the specification • SHOULD Definition: There may exist valid reasons in particular circumstances to ignore a particular item, but the full implications must be understood and carefully weighted before choosing a different course of action.

Monitoring Conformance IM&T DES Accreditation • As part of ‘business as usual’ utilise IM&T DES/LES Accreditation to track & report on Conformance against Requirements • Expand current NHS Number question to cover Requirements • Roll out after initial ‘round’ of accreditations obtained • Provide simple signed declaration to Project confirming current conformance by 30th September

Next Steps for Practice Managers • Continue to promote / use NHS Number • Review Action Plan • Ensure action is taken to address Requirements i.e. use NHS Number alongside other demographics on ALL communication, correspondence & documentation containing PID • Review tools produced by NHS Number Project and implement where appropriate • Provide number of NHS Number cards required to Michelle Burkey by 30th September • Provide simple signed declaration of current conformance to Michelle Burkey by 30th September
