This document outlines G55/2 from the perspective of tree programme managers, including Alan Daley. G55/2 aims to establish a common framework for safe working practices for Distribution Network Operator (DNO) tree contract work near electrical equipment. The updated framework reflects significant changes in safety culture and risk management within the tree and vegetation industry. Key shifts include additional operational categories and stringent safety measures, ensuring compliance with legislation and improved network reliability, ultimately benefiting DNOs and their customers.

A DNO’s perspective on G55/2 Alan Daley (Tree Programme Manager)
Overview of G55/2 The purpose of G55/2 is to provide a common basis for safe working practices for DNO tree contract work in Proximity to any Distribution Network Operator’s equipment. The tree and vegetation industry has undertaken a big step change in their safety culture since the publication of G55/1. G55/2 now reflects this change
The main difference between G55/1 and G55/2 involves the categories of tree work and the procedures to control risk, and it now addresses DNO work specifically Previously, there were three categories. There are now four categories: A, B, C and D, which allow arborists to work up to the safety distances
DNO’s perspective • Safety – • We are now asking arborists to work closer to our network than ever before. • All arborists are being retrained to the new NPTC standards and procedures. • Central Networks has in certain areas decided to apply more stringent methods of work than those recommended by G55/2. • These are being briefed out by Central Networks.
DNO’s perspective. • Helps to speed up compliance with legislation (ESQCR) • Reduce customer inquires and complaints • Financial benefits – • Reduced network interruptions • Able to cut more live spans • Reduced number of tree related incidents • Less CI and CMLs incurred • Safer and more reliable network for our customers
Summary • There are concerns regarding safety- working closer to the network • These are been managed by risk assessment, training, auditing and where necessary DNO’s restrictions • There are compliance with legislation benefits which in turn brings customer satisfaction • There are financial savings which ultimately benefit the DNO, customers and stakeholders
A DNO’s perspective on the revised UA units David McAlinden (Tree Compliance Manager)
So, in summary • CN’s tree contractors are currently undergoing technical updates and assessment to the revised UA units • When this process is complete, CN will brief its tree • contractors to G55/2 and its locally required “amendments” • After briefing, CN tree contractors will be working to G55/2
