Federal R&D Rankings (2001) • One measure of a research university’s “success” is annual federal R&D funding • The SURA region had 33 of the top 100 research universities & academic med ctrs, accounting for 29% of 2001 R&D • Only one, Johns Hopkins, is in the top 20
Carnegie Classifications 2000 • In 2000, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching restructured its well-known, if controversial, institutional classification system • DR Ext – “Doctoral/research universities-extensive” is a new category (with more institutions than the former “top” category, Research I) for institutions that confer 50 doctorates a year in at least 15 disciplines
