  2. Terms You MUST know!!!!! Absolute monarch Divine right • A ruler whose power was not limited by having to consult with the nobles, common people, or their representatives. • A belief that the monarchs received their power from God and therefore must not be challenged WANT TO BE IN CHARGE OF EVERYTHING!!

  3. The King of Spain Speaks NO Spanish

  4. Wimpy Quick Learner • Spoke four languages. Charles is said to have spoken “Spanish to God, Italian to women, French to men, and German to his horse.” • Member of the ancient and powerful Hapsburg Family

  5. Manly Charles V • Born in Belgium, raised speaking French • Thin and sickly kid • Became king of Spain at 16 years old. Grandson of Queen Isabella • Seen as a foreigner because he didn’t speak Spanish

  6. Manly King to Beastly Emperor Ruler of the World! • Well not really • 1519, throne of Holy Roman Empire became vacant. • Position elective; Charles borrowedmoney to buy votes. Becomes Holy Roman Emperor. • Italy, Austria, various German states • So vast ‘the sun never set” over it

  7. Why Can’t We Be Friends? FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT! • Faced enemies on all sides—Ottoman Turks, French, rebellious German princes • First to use guns and fought for religious control over Europe, taking control from the nobility

  8. Peace, Everybody Peace Peace Peace • Because he believed in divine right, Charles V sought to unite everyone through Catholcism. After years of warfare, Charles V had to sign Peace of Augsburg • Agreement gave German princes right to decide if their state would be Catholic or Protestant • Constant warfare also brought Charles to brink of bankruptcy

  9. I Give Up! Eventually, Charles gave up his titles and divided his empire, joined a monastery. Split between his brother and his son Ruling two empires involved Charles in constant warfare.

  10. Only in America! Spanish Golden Age (1550-1650) • Charles V more successful in Americas than in Europe • During reign, Spanish explorers claimed much of Americas for Spain • Silver and gold flowed from American colonies • Hernán Cortés, who conquered Aztec empire • Francisco de Coronado, who explored American Southwest region

  11. Philip II in the House Philip II, Charles V’s son becomes ruler of Spain. Marries the warm, loving Mary Tudor of England (also known as Bloody Mary)

  12. Together, the Super Catholic Couple Try to Wipe Out Protestants The Netherlands refused to declare allegiance to Philip II Duke of Alba steps in: Forms the Council of Blood. Seven northern provinces formed independent nation.

  13. The Spanish Armada • As a fellow Protestant Elizabeth I of England • > sent aid to Dutch rebels I • > allowed ship captains to attack Spanish treasure ships, steal gold, silver for England • King Philip II wanted to stop England from raiding ships and return England to the Catholic Church

  14. 1. Bought merchant ships and tried to turn them into war ships, problem is: bad weather, ship’s going to sink. • 3. Guns were fixed into the ship which made them almost impossible to move or reload. • 4. Storm takes out even more ships and Spain returns with 1/3 of what they had. Epic Fail- The Spanish Armada • 2. Philip didn’t have enough canons so he started to strip the land of all canons and add them to the ship, problem is: mixing and matching canons and ammunition makes loading very difficult.
