English Education in the Japanese school system • Globalization has made English in to a great tool • Japan is realizing importance of English education • TOEFL/TOICE is becoming more popular • English Language classes are popular amongst children • Now days, elementary school have English classes

Interview of elementary school English teachers • Purpose • To have children adapt to English easier • New things are learned faster at a younger age • To grow more children that are interested in English • Classes are held once or twice a month, approximately an hour for each class • Native speaker comes to class about five times a year • Curriculum consists mainly of speaking and communication

  3. Interview of elementary school English teachers • Negative points • Some of the children won’t learn English well • Some children get the impression that they are able to “use” English • End up having hollow confidence • Able to communicate, but not read

Reading and Writing • Reading and writing are necessary skills • In order to do this vocabulary is a necessity • Problems of vocabulary • Difficult to predict what words will become necessary in the future • Children interests differ from one another • Some force is necessary, but children’s interests is also important

  5. English vs Japanese • Opinionates believe that English language and culture is talking over Japanese traditions • Reason • Decline in the areas of Japanese vocabulary and grammar • “Kanji” the Chinese letters used in Japanese • Cause of teaching more than children can handle
