  2. Quick Facts NSERC: • Provides funds for research in the natural sciences and engineering at Canadian universities • Provides funds for student training in research • Federal agency • Invests in people, discovery and innovation

  3. NSERC’s Vision “NSERC will help make Canada a country of discoverers and innovators for the benefit of all Canadians.”

  4. NSERC Budget 2005-2006$865 million

  5. Investing in People • Grants to over 10,000 researchers • Scholarships and fellowships to 22,000 of Canada’s best students • Direct NSERC support for students is about $130 million (2005-2006)

  6. Investing in People • Undergraduate Summer Student Award, for top undergraduates to carry out research projects • Other undergraduates may be hired as research assistants from NSERC Discovery Grant money to professors • Graduate student scholarships for top students and for students doing collaborative projects with industry

  7. Investing in Discovery • Investments in “basic research,” which increases our understanding of the natural world and of basic processes • Potential application is long-term, sometimes revolutionary: for example, early research into lasers, plate tectonics now have enormous economic spin-off • NSERC supports the research of about 10,000 university professors through Discovery Grants totaling about $388 million • Here at Saint Mary’s, most professors in the Faculty of Science have NSERC Discovery Grants.

  8. Investing in Innovation • Investment of $165 million in project-based joint research between universities and industry • Currently, over 800 companies are partners in 700 projects • At Saint Mary’s, for example, we have projects jointly with the oil and gas industry.

  9. In summary • Math, science and engineering are fun • But they also underpin the Canadian economy • Organisations like NSERC, together with industry, want to invest in you as potential future mathematicians, scientists or engineers • Be aware of these opportunities when you come to university.
