BioenNW Background • EU 2020 targets aimed at preventing a 2°C temperature rise • Reduction in GHG emissions by 20% of 1990 levels • Reduction of energy consumption by 20% through increased energy efficiency • Increase global share of RES to 20% within the EU • Biomass currently accounts for about half of all renewables in EU (4% of TPES) • The scenarios published by the European Commission show that the annual amount of biomass heat and electricity will account to a total of 1,650 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2020 (increase of 69%) • Much expertise in Biomass is available • …but is neither co-ordinated nor matched with commercial exploaitation

  5. BioenNW Mission “ To promote wider adoption of local bioenergy in North West Europe and to stimulate the potential for biomass to make a substantial contribution to increasing energy security, reducing carbon emissions and creating employment”.

BioenNW Aims • Five Bioenergy Support Centres providing information and feedstock testing service to stakeholders; • Tools for training, education and dissemination; • Decision Support Scheme - a knowledge based tool that will assist identification of high potential bioenergy development sites and preparation of 25 site specific business development plans; • Installation of an anaerobic digestion coupled with pyrolysis demonstrator; • Development of five new bioenergy schemes to point of build, employing the tools and networks developed by the project. • Collaboration with fuel supply chains, financial and regulatory bodies;
