  4. Whoever or Whomever Functions of Whoever The use of "whoever" is similar to the use of "who" in English sentences. Both of these words are used in the subjective case. That is, they are used both as subjects of verbs and as predicate nominatives (nouns that follow linking verbs like the "be" verbs). Therefore, for instance, in the phrase "___ guesses correctly," "whoever" would be used, because it would be serving as the subject of the verb "guesses." Functions of Whomever The use of "whomever" is similar to the use of "whom" in English sentences. Both of these words are used in the objective case. That is, they are used as the object of a verb or object of a preposition. For instance, in the sentence, "You will speak to ___ I choose," "whomever" is the correct pronoun to use, because it is serving as the object of "choose."

  5. Practice Whoever / Whomever is hungry can have the leftover pizza. (Whoever is the subject of the verb is, like "He is hungry.") Whoever / Whomevershe selects as project manager will have to work many long nights. (Whomever is the object of the verb selects, like “she selects him as project manager”) Whoever / Whomever makes the best speech will get my vote. Whoever / Whomever parked this car needs to move it. Whoever / Whomever ate my chocolate is in big trouble!
