  2. Vision A collaborative and technologically driven district to ensure students will reach their highest potential

  3. Problem • Hickory Ridge High School has the latest Technology • Technology is not being used to its fullest potential • Hickory Ridge should be a model school for other in the district • Lack o f positive communication, cooperation, respect and trust between staff members and administration

  4. Problem Continued • In the last 4 years, 27 new teachers have been placed at Hickory Ridge • Have great potential in helping the school reach its vision • Recently hired teachers have not meshed with the more experienced teachers

  5. Solution • Principal O'Connor needs to change his leadership style • Lead with a humanistic style • To gain respect of all faculty • Influence the experienced staff and gain the respect of the younger staff while motivating both • Stay positive and neutral

Humanistic Approach Strong way to motivate individuals Administration support and participation was a main motivator of staff members work and commitment Expressed personal satisfaction in seeing progress and change take place as a result of their professional collaboration and decision-making Administration also needs to incorporate technology into curriculum through staff development Recognize PLCs for the hard work they put in

Humanistic Approach • Staff encouragement needed to repair growing division and frustration amongst faculty • To implement the district’s new vision Principal O'Connor will have to abdicate his bureaucratic leadership style • Principal O'Connor will need to continually develop a humanistic approach to his leadership style • Additional studies • Attending professional workshops • Researching • Sharing with other humanistic leaders • Principal O'Connor’s change will be a catalyst for change in the building. • All teachers will feel a sense of empowerment.

  9. Empowering the Teachers • Allow teachers to make their own decisions • Support teachers decisions • This will increase their motivation to work • Affecting student outcomes • The progression of the school toward the district’s vision • Empowerment will motivate collaboration

  14. Committees and Collaboration • Ways Principal O'Connor can implement collaboration at Hickory Ridge High School • PLCs • Teacher Mentoring Program • Co-Teaching • SMART committee • All these programs will lead to teacher empowerment

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) Groups of staff members focused on improvement in learning and best practices through collaborative teams Can change an organization from the inside Assist in building shared governance and collaboration among teachers and the school as a whole Provide time for open dialogue and sharing of best practices Principal O'Connor can mix a variety of staff members to support unity and focus on a common vision

Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) • Research shows that PLCs will improve collaboration • Create honest and open communication between staff • Based on subject area • Meet bi-weekly to share best practices and technology use • Meeting will be documented to be discussed with whole school • Principal O'Connor • Include himself in PLCs • Interaction with staff will be a good motivator

Mentoring Program • Help reduce the division between two groups • Pair new hires with experienced teachers • Share knowledge between the two • Technology and experience within the community • Directive for groups will come from teacher leaders • Meet at least bi-monthly and observe each other monthly • Document meetings

Co-Teaching Co-teaching would make a “natural pairing” among teachers Two teachers of different subjects sharing a class and collaborating with each other Teachers will teach his/her primary subject and observe when the other teacher is teaching More intensive style of mentoring Principal O'Connor could use Working toward a collaborative culture with a shared vision

Emotional Intelligence • Principal O'Connor will have to deal with staff after implementing new changes at the school • Studying emotional intelligence helps meet the needs of staff • Being able to monitor emotions of oneself and others and using these emotions to navigate their actions • Consider the emotional state of his staff • Awareness of emotions thru school reform increases support for staff.
