Mission of the WRRC • The University of Arizona's Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) promotes understanding of critical state and regional water management and policy issues through research, community outreach and public education. • The WRRC is committed to: • assisting communities in water management and policy; • educating teachers, students and the public about water; and • encouraging scientific research on state water issues. • REAL WORLD and APPLIED

WRRC is networked • The Water Resources Research Institute for AZ • A Research and Extension Unit in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (some state budget $ but not line item). • Part of the University of Arizona Water Sustainability Program, a university-wide program led by the directors of five centers that focus on water and is connected to the UA Translational Environmental Research Initiative. Infusion of tax $ approved by the public. • Professor in multiple departments and serving as Director of the WSP. Teach Arizona Water Policy course.

WRRC Programs/Activities/Projects • Administer the 104b Grants program • Grants issued annually to researchers at the three state universities • Information Transfer • Newsletter and Other Publications • Arizona Water Resource newsletter (hard copy with insert, which provides partnership opportunity) • Arroyo single issue newsletter • Web site, www.cals.arizona.edu/azwater/ • Other Grants • Home for some Water Sustainability Program Competitive Grants • Directed Initiatives • Brown Bag Seminars

Program/Activities/Projects Continued • Federally authorized Transboundary Aquifer Assessment Program (AZ, NM, TX) • Artificial Recharge as a Tool for meeting Arizona Water Policy Objectives • Layperson’s Guide to Arizona Water • Annual Conference (See newsletter insert) • Arizona Project WET • NEMO and NRCS Projects • Environmental Enhancement Projects Analysis • Conserve to Enhance Mechanism

Common Factors/Themes • Respond to needs for analysis and information • Examples: Water Resource Availability study • NRCS work • Characterize and analyze issues and practices that have not been written about for water professional, public officials and the general public • Examples: Recharge Arroyo, Management Plans • Partner on and off campus • Educate (many, many vehicles) • Collaborate • Always look for opportunities • Example: Layperson’s Guide • (Powell Consortium dollars ??)

Closing Thoughts • Applied work is challenging and rewarding • Helps if personnel have flexibility in their projects (function of source of salary $) • Limited staffing and budget require outside funding for project support • Importance of independence and credibility • We welcome your suggestions and input
