Health Plan Intro: T.I.C • All International and Exchange Students are Automatically enrolled in the International Student Health Plan once they register for classes. • Travel Insurance Coordinators Ltd. is the insurance provider used by Dalhousie University. They are a recognized leader in the health insurance industry, offering a broad selection of products and services. They have extensive experience providing insurance to International and Exchange Students.

  3. Cost • $440 for coverage from January 1-August 31. • Dependant family can be added for an additional $648 • Your spouse can be covered at an additional cost of $424 Please meet with Amy Braye in the ISES office to add your family members to the plan.

  4. Can I opt out of the TIC Plan? Yes! All International and Exchange Students can opt out of the TIC Health Plan if they have alternate and equivalent coverage. Requirements: • Come to the ISES Office in the Killam Library. • Fill out a Opt Out Wavier Form. • Show proof of alternative coverage (either an insurance card, letter from embassy or policy). Deadline January 14th and every September that you attend Dalhousie

  5. Card Pick up… Heath Cards will be ready for you to pick up at the Health Plan Information Session. It will be held Tuesday, January 29th at 2:30! This Session is mandatory. Please bring your DalCard.

  6. Benefits • Doctor and specialist visits • Hospital services • Pre-approved diagnostic tests, x-rays and blood tests • Professional services (PT, OT, Psychiatry, etc.) and prescription drugs while in hospital. Complete list available in the Health Policy

  7. Out of Province Benefits • You are covered for temporary trips/visits outside Nova Scotia if they are less than 30 days • Consult the ISES office to confirm coverage while on a co-op work term outside Nova Scotia

  8. Accessing Health Services Dalhousie Health Services: • Will bill the insurance company directly • Will be familiar with your insurance Plan • Appointment necessary; appointment often available the next day Walk-in Clinic: • May not direct bill • Will not be familiar with your insurance plan • Appointment not necessary Hospital Emergency Room: • May not direct bill • Will not be familiar with your insurance plan • Patients will be seen in order of severity of the emergency; wait times can vary from 4-8 hours for less severe cases

  9. Emergency Services • Hospital drop in or emergency room services costs upwards of $300 per visit. • An appointment with Dal Health Services for the same non-emergency services costs approximately $30 • Use Dal Health Services on campus to avoid long waits and costly services.

  10. Who to Contact in an Emergency If you go to the Hospital: You MUST call TIC within 24 hours to confirm in-patient hospital coverage and diagnostic testing. • If you do not call to confirm hospitalization, it could affect the type of coverage you receive. • Show the hospital your health card when you are admitted • Toll-free number to report hospitalization to TIC is located on the back of your health card.

  11. Dal Health Services The clinic is made up of physicians, nurses and office staff. The doctors area of expertise includes family practice, obstetrics, psychiatry, sports medicine and Canadian immigration physicals. Remember… • You must book an appointment in advance. • Always remember your health card. • Always cancel your appointment if you are not able to attend! If you do not cancel and do not attend, you will be billed for the appointment.

  12. Making Claims What is a claim? • Submitting a bill for a medical service that you were required to pay for. Example: walk-in clinic appointment, eye exams. How do I get my money back? • Complete a claim form and attach your receipt. • Claim forms and assistance available at ISES office. NOTE: Dal Health Services directly bills TIC, which results in no out of pocket expenses at each doctor visit.

Contact Amy for: • Health insurance questions • Questions about submitting a claim • Questions about the Health Plan fee on your Student Account Contact TIC for: • Hospitalization • Confirming something is covered • Inquiries about a claim If you require medical advice or attention seek a medical professional.
