Evaluating Your EAFM Practices: Group Analysis and Improvement Strategies

This activity focuses on assessing current Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) practices. Participants will revisit and categorize threats and issues identified earlier into the three EAFM components: Ecological Well-being, Human Well-being, and Good Governance. Groups will analyze their fisheries management approaches, identify existing EAFM elements, and highlight gaps. Suggestions will be made to improve practices. Homework involves plotting the application of the seven EAFM principles in participants' fisheries to prepare for further discussion and enhancement.

  2. Activity 1 Revisit threats and issues from this morning. Do any more need to be added? Now working as a group - start to group the threats & issues into the three EAFM components: Ecological well-being Human well-being Goodgovernance 2

  3. Activity 2 Analyze your current fisheries management approaches and practices Identify which EAFM elements you are already doing Identify the gaps in your EAFM practices and suggest ways to address these Share these in your groups. Keep notes (you will need these for rest of course) 3

  4. Homework Refer to your Workbook. This shows a continuum with 0 = none through to 5 = excellent Think about your fishery. For each of the 7 EAFM principles listed, plot the extent to which each principle is being applied in your fishery We will build on this work tomorrow 4
