  1. Design Review S13-44-GLCK 4/18/2013

  2. Who We Are Baker Alotaibi • Mechanical Engineer Travis Arnold • Electrical Engineer Richard Posada • Computer Engineer Devin Scarborough • Mechanical Engineer FahadAlotaibi • Electrical Engineer

  3. Design Overview • Locking Mechanism • Lock Case Material • Power Subsystem • Microcontroller Subsystem • Software Subsystem

  4. Locking Mechanism Rack and Pinion mechanism • Handles much travel depending on setup • Simple to manufacture • Key Failsafe and Mechanism Relation

  5. Locking Mechanism Key and Matching Lock Cylinder • Typical Key Pros and Cons • Barrel or Tube Key and Cylinder

  6. Locking Mechanism Solenoids • Ideal use for simple lock operation • Solenoid Force versus Plunger Extension

  7. Lock Case Material Stainless Steel: • Advantages: hard material does not corrode. • Disadvantages: High cost, hard to fabricate. • Brass: • Advantages: high-class look, corrosive resistance, easily machined, cheaper. • Disadvantages: Weak, easily damaged, non-weather resistant • Steel: • Advantages: Very strong, easy construction. • Disadvantages: heavy, corrosion, action of rust.

  8. Power Subsystem Power subsystem: • Batteries Will be used as a power source • Will supply power to the microcontroller • Microcontroller will provide power to the solenoid and the Bluetooth receiver • Microcontroller supports AAA batteries at 1.5v, and a coin battery “cr2032” 3v

  9. Microcontroller Subsystem Microcontroller subsystem • Rfduino will be the microcontroller used for this design • Is Arduino compatible and uses the same Arduino code • Has low power mode and can run for a long duration of time using only a 3V CR2032 coin battery • Built in wireless communication. i.e. Bluetooth 4.0. • Small in size and low cost • Easy to program with the USB shield Function • Obtains input from phone application • Uses the output mechanisms of the microcontroller to control the solenoids • Will need an N-Channel Mosfet (TIP 102 works fine) as a relay that will provide and switch the power for the 12 V solenoids

  10. Software Subsystem Phone Application • Coded in Eclipse • Java based application • Free Software Microcontroller Application • Coded using Arduino Software • Using Arduino based libraries • Free software
