  1. My topic area By Sophie Giles

  2. For my topic area I chose reality television, specifically focusing on how the characters are represented and how this may appeal to the audience. I have looked at a variety of programmes from MTV’s Geordie Shore and The Valleys to ITV ‘Towie’ and X Factor for research. However, in this power point I will be focusing on ‘The Valleys’.

  3. I chose to study reality television as my topic area because it has become one of the most popular type of programme on television and is an area I enjoy and have interest in. Reality television may appear to just be a broadcast product, but it is also an e- media product as many reality programmes ask you to get involved by going online and ‘tweeting’. Furthermore, reality television can be featured in print products such as magazines as the characters are considered celebrities; therefore my topic area approaches all three aspects on the media. Why I chose reality television

  4. This clip is of MTV’s The Valleys. This program represents people in ‘the valleys’ negatively as it sterotypeseveryone in Wales as being badly behaved like them such as drinking ‘too much’ alcohol and also portrays the cast negatively as they appear to have no respect by publicly ‘teabagging’ in front of the press as though they are proud. Although The Valleys is a reality television programme it has a sense of hyper reality because of their disgraceful behaviour and how all the cast are a similar as though the programme has set them up to be together and cause trouble. Females are presented as having no self respect for themselves by showing her ‘tits’ to the press and any viewers of the programme. However, the cast of the valleys are represented positively as they have ‘big dreams’ and have joined the programme specifically to try and make their dream come true. Dominant ideology is presented in this press conference by boys acting as monkeys as though they are alpha males. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBjuhJuqehM Humour is applied in this press conference to appeal to the target audience by showing the cast rebelling against the formal, professional behaviour that is normally applied at a press conference.

  5. This is an image taken from the Valleys series one advertisement. The image uses symbolism by including sheep which is a Welsh icon to associate it with the programme. Furthermore, the girls are stereotyped as promiscuous as they are wearing provocative clothing and flaunting their assets. Dominant ideology is apparent in this image by having a man in the middle of the screen as though he is the most important and a man standing strong on the right of the image. However, females are positively presented as there is a woman at the front of the image standing stern as though she has just as much authority as the men.
