  1. Chapter 2.2 Map Types • Maps are flat models of 3D objects, which distort all land masses are distorted.

  2. Projection Maps– maps made by transferring points from a globe onto a map Mercator Projections • 2 D maps with parallel lines longitude and latitude • these distort the poles so that Greenland looks larger than Australia (the opposite is true) • Used for airplane and ship navigation

  3. Conic Projections • Made by projection point and lines from a globe onto a cone • Used for road and weather maps but still distort larger areas

Topographic Maps • A mercator projection showing changes in elevation using contour lines which connect areas of equal elevation • Contour interval – the difference in elevation between two adjacent contour lines • Index Contours are contour lines marked with numbers • Depressed Contours are lines with haves on them showing the present of a crater or mine
